“The sky’s the limit when it comes to craftsmanship and fabrication. This is my laboratory. Whenever I want to try something that’s brand new, I’m going to try it in my laboratory.”

The MKC Monogramme handbag

You’ll find that so-called laboratory in Italy. For the last 15 years, Michael has worked with local artisans there to produce the finest elements of his collections, including his beloved handbags. Handcrafted in a family-owned-and-operated factory in Florence, each Michael Kors Collection bag is created using techniques passed down for generations. To show you the process, we take you inside the factory to see how our new Monogramme satchel is made. The 11-hour process begins by hand-cutting 18 square feet of crocodile-embossed leather into individual pieces, which are measured using paper templates. After burnishing the leather pieces, artisans then hand-stitch them into the shape of the bag. Luxurious metal hardware reinforces the construction and adds a contemporary edge before the leather is hand-brushed with dimensional color. The final touch? Our new MKC Monogramme, the signature hardware Michael introduced for transeason 2019. Expanded upon for fall, this season you’ll also find it on totes, travel duffels, and canteen bags. “I used to sketch this monogram back when I was in high school, dreaming about my future as a designer,” says Michael. The mark is a personalized finishing touch, befitting the care with which each Michael Kors Collection handbag is made.
