MICHAEL AT THE MET

The most glamorous night in fashion takes place on the first Monday in May, and this year, as always, Michael Kors was front and center. The 2023 Met Gala paid tribute to legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld and the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. Michael arrived arm-in-arm with his date for the evening—Golden Globe-winning actress Emily Blunt—in addition to crafting dazzling custom coordinating looks for actress Kerry Washington and her husband, actor Nnamdi Asomugha. Also dressed in one-of-a-kind Michael Kors Collection were Broadway sensation Lea Michele and fan-favorite actresses Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Park and Kaitlyn Dever. Shimmering recycled sequins, glittering crystals and eye-catching mirrored accents emphasized a fine focus on detail, as Michael crafted his designs with the dress code in mind: “In Honor of Karl.”

Artisans spent over 4,250 hours crafting Emily Blunt’s trousers and overskirt, hand-embroidering close to 350,000 recycled sequins. Her flower appliqué brooch, worn with a French lace blouse and oversized organza bow, was created by embossing individual, hand-embroidered sequin petals fused to a silk base.

Kerry Washington’s hand-beaded guipure lace tulle rumba skirt and matching bandeau, featuring more than 135,000 recycled sequins, required almost 1,000 hours of hand-stitching by artisans.

LEA MICHELE

Requiring over 1,400 hours of hand embroidery, Lea Michele’s gown was adorned with 11,700 mirrored sequins and 10,100 scattered crystals. Strands of glittering fringe created a dégradé effect down the arms and length of the gown.

Taking 24 hours of handwork each, the flower appliqués on Vanessa Hudgens’ black-and-white chiffon jersey draped gown were created by embossing individual, hand-embroidered sequin petals that were fused to a silk base.

Ashley Park’s custom Michael Kors Collection mesh gown for the 2023 Met Gala featured over 1 million recycled micro-sequins overlapped to create a fishnet effect, requiring 4,500 hours to hand-embroider.

Thousands of sequins in seven different shapes and sizes were artfully hand-embroidered atop guipure lace to create Kaitlyn Dever’s cutout goddess gown, which took artisans over 2,500 hours to complete.
