michael's world - london travel story

I always love spending time in London. There’s nowhere else you can find such a unique blend of history and modernity—plus, some of the best people-watching in the world. It’s truly a fashion capital with the most interesting mix of styles and attitudes from vintage on Portobello Road to unique finds at Spitalfields to the luxury in Mayfair. Add in the brilliant theater scene, the great restaurants and nightlife, and it’s like a home away from home. Here are some of my top picks in the city.

TO STAY

I love Claridge’s because it’s one of those rare places where they’ve held on to the history and the tradition of the hotel but modernized it to function in today’s world. The service is parallel to none and the location is spectacular with the best of London at your doorstep. The art deco bathrooms are also heavenly, and they have the greatest water pressure of any hotel in the world.

TO EAT

Soak up the history at Rules, the oldest restaurant in London. It’s in the theatre district and they have fabulous roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and game. If you’re a Downton Abbey fan, go to Rules to feel like Lady Mary. If you happen to get a sunny day in London, your first stop should be River Café for an al fresco lunch and the best Italian food outside of Italy. Cap off the night with a buzzy dinner at the Chiltern Firehouse—it’s the place to see and be seen.

TO DO

I can’t spend more than 24 hours in London without seeing a show. I especially love the National Theatre. On the weekend, head to the Sunday Flower Market in the East End. It’s divine, and you’ll feel like you’re hanging out with Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. And no trip is complete without a walk through Hyde Park—make sure you save time to take in the Diana Memorial Fountain.

Make Liberty London your first stop. Not only is the building itself charming and very British, but they have everything from their signature fabrics to the latest designer finds. Just a few blocks away is Browns Brook Street in Mayfair, an amazing boutique meets gallery meets spa.
